    Fashion for any shape – how to highlight your best features

    The problem with fast fashion is that it misses a key point: women are different. Even if two people have similar measurements, it doesn’t mean that exactly the same size of clothes will fit them. But how do we know what fits us best and which items will bring out the best in us?

    Firstly it is very important to know your body shape.

     The Pear body shape


    The pear shape (or triangle) is characterized by narrow shoulders and a defined waist. The top half of the body is generally smaller than the part below the waist. Your cleavage is less full, therefore it is important to highlight other areas instead. Try balancing the fuller lower body with putting layers on your top body.

    You can highlight your waistline with fitted styles and choose darker trousers with a straight or flare cut. Opt for A-line skirts and dresses that go beyond your knees and be brave with patterns.

    The Hourglass body shape

    You can call your body shape ‘hourglass’, if your shoulders are almost the same width as your hips, with a defined waist and fuller bottom.

    It is generally easy to dress for this body shape, as you can choose between V-necks, boat necks or round necks. You can pick peplum tops and wrap blouses. When wearing dresses, you have all the freedom in the world. Show off your silhouette and always highlight your waist! Stay away from boxy cuts and oversized items.

     The Apple body shape


    This shape is fuller towards the middle section of the body. The tummy, and bust areas are in focus, which is why you need to optically lengthen your torso.

    Tops should be flowy and go below your hipline. Avoid anything too tight or cropped tops. You can cover up with coats, jackets and vests that finish above your knees.

    Wear dresses that are not too fitted and go beyond the thighs. Anything with V necks and boat necks can be ideal for your shape.

    The Athletic body shape


    Your figure is similar to a rectangle; your shoulders are the same width as your hips and you have little waist definition.

    As the weight is evenly distributed on your body, your aim is to create that little curviness, optically.

    You can wear halterneck tops, or strapless styles, or opt for ¾ sleeves in darker shades. Choose trench coats or fitted coats to create some waist with belts and buttons. Stay away from oversized jumpers, jackets or tops in general.

    A-line dresses and skirts can also create this hourglass visual, so be brave and choose these styles!

    Below, you can wear skinny jeans or trousers, or even wider ones, with a gathered waist.

    The idea of slow fashion is not only a contemporary trend that is taking over the world, but a solution to a real-life social problem that affects each and every one of us. Nowadays we live in a society that pushes information to our brain 24 hours a day and urges us to buy, keep up and collect. This phenomenon, when we talk about the fashion industry, is called fast fashion: trends that change every season, clothing and accessories that are available affordable but low quality and therefore end up in the trash in no time.

    When shopping for that perfect little black dress for example, how many of us do actually think about where that dress was made? Who had to put energy and work into producing and selling that dress to us? It is understandable that we automatically look at the price tag and find less expensive pieces more appealing, but do we actually think about who has to pay that little extra we saved? The problem with fast fashion is that it is pushing workers (garment technologists, people working in factories) to produce more for a much lower income. A lot of times they offer their lives for the 5-8 Euro t-shirt we pick up from the shelf and wear approximately five times. So what is the solution?

    The solution to fix this global issue is to adapt ourselves to buying more thoughtfully. When looking at a possible new garment, look at the tag: the tag shows you everything you need to know about the product, just like ingredient labels on food. It shows where that item was produced, what materials were used to produce it and from that you can easily tell if the work that has been put into it was paid fairly or not.

    Due to statistics, women only wear 20% of their closet 80% of the time. Which means, most items just hang there sometimes still with the label on. If you start dressing mindfully, you will find that you only buy clothes you actually like and wear.


    Step 1

    Know your style and only go for garments that fit you perfectly. Don’t make any compromises; the perfect items will highlight your shape perfectly.


    Step 2

    Buy key pieces you can mix and match. After doing a full wardrobe cleanout, decide what you will need (a white shirt, basic trousers, a little black dress etc.). Write a list and follow it when shopping.
