Fashion for All Shapes: How to Highlight Your Best Features

by EW Group on December 16, 2018

The problem with fast fashion is that it ignores the fact that women have different shapes. Even if two people have similar measurements, they may still have different clothing sizes. How can we know what suits us best and what clothes bring out our best features?

First and foremost, it’s important to define your body shape.

The Pear Body Shape

The pear shape (or triangular shape) is characterized by narrow shoulders and a defined waist. The top half of the body is generally smaller than lower half (below the waist). Breasts tend to be less full, it’s therefore worth accentuating other areas instead. You can balance out a wider lower body by wearing layers on your top half.

Highlight your waistline with fitted styles and choose darker trousers with straight or flare cuts. Opt for A-line skirts and dresses that go below your knees, and be brave with patterns.

The Hourglass Body Shape

An hourglass body shape has hips that are almost the same width as the shoulders, a defined waist and a fuller bottom.

Generally speaking, it’s easy to dress with this body shape, and you can choose between V-, boat or round necks. You can wear peplum tops, wrap blouses and practically any style of dress you want. You can show off your shape and accentuate your waist. Stay away from boxy cuts and oversized items, though.

The Apple Body Shape

This shape has a fuller waist, hips, stomach and bust, so it’s important to wear clothes that elongate the torso.

Tops should be flowy and fall beneath your hipline. Avoid anything too tight or cropped tops. You can cover up with coats, jackets and vests that fall above your knees.

Wear dresses that are not too tightly fitted and that fall below the thighs. V-neck and boat necks are ideal for this shape.

The Sporty Body Shape

This shape is rectangular, with shoulders that are the same width as the hips and a smaller waist.

Because weight is evenly distributed on your body, you should aim to create a bit of curviness.

Wear halter-neck or strapless tops, or you can opt opt for ¾-length sleeves in darker shades. Choose trench or fitted coats with a belt or buttons to highlight your waist. Avoid oversized jumpers, jackets or tops in general.

A-line dresses and skirts can also create an hourglass-type shape, so go for this style. You can also wear skinny jeans or trousers and wider ones with a gathered waist.

Once you define your body shape, you can easily find the clothes and styles that fit you best. If you’re unsure, consult with a stylist!
