7 Summer Basics, or What to Take with You in Your Carry-on in Case Your Checked-in Luggage Gets Lost

Of course, you don’t always have to prepare for the worst, but let’s look at this as a capsule wardrobe test. If you’re travelling abroad by plane, assume your checked-in luggage gets lost (it’s happening a lot lately with airlines!). Here, we offer some tips on what essential clothes you should take in your carry-on luggage or backpack for a longer summer holiday.

  1. The white T-shirt

This probably doesn’t require a long explanation. A nice, white T-shirt goes with practically any bottom regardless of your body shape. Choose a loose, comfortable T that’s perfect for any outfit! It goes well with an elegant skirt, denim shorts or Palazzo pants. An elegant print is also a great option, as long as it’s not too loud and bright.

  1. A ‘dress and go’ light summer dress

The emphasis is on ‘light’, so the fabric is key. Choose a dress that doesn’t crease and isn’t too tight fitting. You can go with a coloured fabric (basic colours like white, beige or black) or one that has small summer-y patterns. You can wear it over your bathing suit of for the beach bar. Choose something simple without a lot of straps or buttons.

  1. Sightseeing sandals

This is definitely a summer must-have. If you’re travelling in your sneakers, then sandals should be the second pair of footwear you take with you. The design and style is up to you, but choose something comfortable that you can spend hours walking in. Don’t take a completely new pair that you haven’t broken in yet, otherwise you’ll find yourself with painful blisters on your feet. These sandals should be a size that keeps your feet steady, and avoid slippery soles. Go with comfortable sandals that have straps or buckles.

  1. Summer shirt or shirt dress

A summer shirt or shirt dress can be really versatile, since you can wear it alone or with shorts or a top as an extra layer. You can also wear it over your bathing suit. You can choose a loose fitting style and wear a belt to accentuate your waist. Make sure the fabric is light and airy. A blue striped shirt or shirt dress is always popular for beach holidays, and it looks great with a straw hat and oversized sunglasses!

  1. Elegant shorts (that are not denim)

Jeans shorts are fashionable and never go out of style, but well-tailored, looser shorts can be even more comfortable. Wear them with a slightly tighter, light shirt or sleeveless top. Add some gold-coloured accessories, and you’ll be ready to dine out in a nice restaurant or go to a beach bar in your flip-flops.

  1. Sleeveless top

The sleeveless top has many styles and can be worn with any number of garments. A tighter black top is not only great with loose shorts, but ideal with an open shirt for the evenings. You can opt for a satin or silk sleeveless top for a ‘barely there’ style. Beware of synthetic fibres, as they can be itchy in hot weather.

  1. Bathing suit

Style and tailoring is key, and bathing suit should fit your body shape and measurements. If you don’t already have a bathing suit, take the time to find the perfect one before you travel. Don’t risk trying to find one at your travel destination. Bathing suits go great with kimonos or see-through summer dresses, so they’re not just for the beach! One-pieces can also work well as bodies when worn with shorts or a skirt.

If you pack these essentials in your carry-on luggage, you can relax and enjoy your holiday!
