Trousers made from denim material, or jeans, originated in the city of Genoa in Italy in the 1860’s. The word ‘denim’ comes from the name of a French town by the name of Serge de Nîmes.
This popular, durable material was made for workers in the US and has now become famous through big jeans brands. It used to be the exact opposite of a fashion item, worn by the working class. The fit was loose and sturdy in the beginning, and there was no such thing as skinny or straight cut jeans. In the 1950s, James Dean appeared on the silver screen wearing jeans as a sign of youth and rebellion, but it was only later that they became more mainstream.
By the 1960s, jeans were becoming increasingly popular, and in the 1970s, they finally became recognized as a fashion item. Different styles appeared, and flared, straight, worn, distressed and stone washed jeans became the ‘it pieces’ of every wardrobe. The original ink-colour was soon followed by different hues, including black, grey and camel.
Today, it’s difficult to find a person who doesn’t have at least one pair of jeans in their closet.
It’s a misconception, however, that denim can only be worn casually and is only suitable for teenagers.
