De-Cluttering Your Wardrobe

by EW Group on March 02, 2017

Let’s begin by admitting that we tend to accumulate a lot of clothes without really appreciating the good pieces we have. The Japanese are famous when it comes to de-cluttering and organization (remember Marie Kondo?), and we truly believe that there’s pleasure to be found in organising your wardrobe.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of clothes in your closet and can’t find anything to wear, here are a few helpful steps to cleaning it out and getting rid of items that are only occupying space.

1) Choose a day when you have a few hours to spare

Cleaning out your wardrobe takes time, so make sure you have more than just a frantic half hour to go through all your clothes. Start by taking out all your clothes and shoes from your closet and lay them on your bed or floor. You’ll be surprised at the number of items you have when you see everything piled up together. Separate your clothes according to type, and if you have many, you can separate them by colour.

2) Select, select, select

Look at each item of clothing separately and assess whether it still fits, if it suits your body shape and importantly, whether you actually wear it. When it comes to size, remember that clothes that too small or too tight can actually make you look bigger. Put these aside because chances are you’ll never wear them. If you’ve lost weight, consider whether any loose-fitting or larger size items still look good on you. If not, get rid of them.

After this, consider the style and quality of each remaining piece. Do you like wearing them and do they bring out your body’s best physical features? Will they last a long time? Are they easy to care for? Is the fabric still in good shape and is the colour still as it was originally? If the answer is no to any of these questions, you’ll know what to do. If some of your favourite clothes have broken zippers or missing buttons, consider whether they’ll still salvageable.

3) Keep only the good pieces

After you’ve finished selecting, you’ll see how many items you have left. Consider the pieces that you cannot do without and those that you don’t wear and won’t be missed. If you find you need some new essentials to replace the ones you’ve gotten rid of, make a list and purchase pieces that are truly timeless and versatile and that you can count on for many seasons and occasions to come. At the end of the day, your clothes serve a purpose, and that’s to make you feel comfortable and look your best at all times.
