by Erika Somfalvi on April 03, 2020

Buying a capsule item means wearing it often for many years and creating numerous outfits. To keep it in perfects shape, you have to care for it, so we’ve put together a little guide on how best to care for your clothes.

You may already be familiar with some of these tips, but there may be some new and useful information to help you enjoy your favourite clothes for longer.

Each time you buy an EW garment, we’ll provide you with some handy tips on how to care for it. Of course, every very piece of clothing has a care label sewn in, but after many washes, the writing may fade, and you may not remember what to do with it!

Because we are committed to slow fashion, our goal is not only to make long-lasting, high-quality garments but to help preserve your garment so that you can wear for as long as possible. Everyone has experienced damaged or faded clothes during washing, so we’ve gathered the most helpful tips here to help you care for your clothes.

The 5 basic pieces of information on clothing labels:

WASHING

Washing is the most important information on a clothing label, and tells you whether a garment can be washed at home (in a washing machine or hand washed) or needs to be dry cleaned.

The wash symbol is:

If the symbol has an X on it (), the garment cannot be hand or machine washed.

The numbers inside the wash symbol () indicate the washing temperature. We recommend washing EW garments at low temperatures to preserve the fabrics.

The symbol for hand wash only (usually for delicate clothing) is:

Tip: If you don’t want to spend hours ironing, wash your clothes at lower temperatures using a low spin. This will help prevent fabrics from falling apart at the seams and keep them from wrinkling. It’s also advisable not to overload the washing machine.

BLEACHING

EW does not recommend the use of chlorine-based bleaches to wash white blouses and t-shirts.

The bleach symbol is:

If the symbol is crossed out (), bleach should not be used on the garment at all.

Tip: If absolutely necessary, use chlorine-free bleach to remove stubborn stains such as lipstick, powder and deodorant.

DRYING

Tumble drying is increasingly popular these days because it’s quicker and easier than air drying. But beware that only a small percentage of clothes can be placed in a dryer without damage. If you have a dryer at home, be sure to follow the instructions on your garment’s label.

The symbol for drying is:

If the symbol is crossed out (), avoid putting the garment in a machine dryer.

Tip: If you want to avoid ironing your clothes after washing, take them out of the washing machine as soon as the cycle is finished, shake them, stretch them out a bit and dry them on hangers.

IRONING

Most of us hate ironing, but unfortunately you can’t get around it with certain fabrics, especially those made of natural materials, such as cotton and linen. Thankfully, most EW garments are made of mixed materials and contain elastane that stretches, so less ironing is needed.
